Double Page Spread Images

First Shoot - Problem!
These are some examples of the shoot I did for my Double Page Spread. My text is about an artist who has come from having nothing, to a recording contract. I felt this sort of an image, in front of a wall with graffiti, would reflect this idea of his past life. I was happy with the shots I produced, however I had had to take them whilst it was dark outside. I wasn't entirely happy about having to do this, and because of the weather this also meant I wasn't able to spend as much time as I would have liked to on this shoot. This therefore meant I needed a quick alternative image, which still conveyed the same idea. 

The solution then came to me, whilst I was taking the images for my final photo on my contents page. Although these images did not follow the same idea I had previously had for my Double Page Spread in the previous shoot, I felt they actually worked better for a number of reasons. The simple background and shadowing relates to this idea of this artist having nothing, as it is very plain. This is a more subtle approach to the idea I was previously trying to create. I also then focused on the model I was using. Previously, my model had had longer hair, which I felt gave him a more 'rock' look, which didn't relate well to my genre. I also then started to think this about the location. However, this model had a look which related much better to my genre of 'pop.' He looked more modern, which also relates better to my target age group. It was important to me that I stuck to my original demographic. 

Final Image - Editing Process

For this image to be a success on my double page spread, I needed to edit it using Photoshop. This would allow me to make the image slightly lighter, so that it was clearer on the page. I developed the problem of these images being slightly dark due to the fact the image was taken when it was dark outside, as this is the only time I had. The artificial lighting therefore made this image slightly orange and dark. 

I firstly used the 'Vibrance' tool, which made the colours in my image slightly lighter. Because the background of my image has a slight amount of colour, I had to use this tool to make this lighter so my model stood out more. 

I then used the 'Curves' tool, and I found this the most effective in maker my image clearer and more appropriate for my double page spread. I moved the curve upwards slightly, which allowed the image to become much lighter and so much clearer. This was most effective in dealing with my problem of this image being too dark, whilst still maintaining detail such as shadowing.

For my text, I have decided I want to do an Interview, as this is what proved most appealing to my target audience in my Questionnaire research. In order to research further, I have decided to read some articles from some magazines, in particular the ones I used for my Textual Analysis', as these suited my genre well in the first place. I found that the interviews presented in the younger magazines, such as 'Just Pop' were more of a basic question and answer format. In the older, more formal magazines, such as 'Rollacoaster' I found the interview was written out as a more lengthy article, with the questions and answers embedded. I have decided that for my interview, I want to do an article styled interview, as I feel this would be more appropriate to my target audience, as 'Just Pop' is aimed at a much younger age gap. But, I am not going to make the article quite as long. I then looked at another magazine, 'Total Guitar,' which included the question and answer idea, but they were questions sent in by fans via Facebook. Therefore, I have started considering entering a smaller section using this idea, however I will not use this idea if it starts to make the spread look too busy. 

I also got some of my inspiration from looking at sites such as 'Twitter' as these gave my some real life experiences of people, such as the likes of Ed Sheeran. I have made sure to mention this one fact in my article, to add to the idea of this being realistic. I will also incorporate some of these real life experiences to my own artists life.

First go! 

Today was our first lesson being taught how to use InDesign to begin creating our Double Page Spreads - and I have to say, it was extremely informative! I learnt how to insert columns for my text, boxes for my images, and how to use the basic ideas of font, text size and colours. I definitely have a good basis to start off my final piece of work for my magazine. Really looking forward to getting started!

This is my final contents page! Much like my front cover, this page had gone through a lot of changes, however I feel I have now altered it enough so that it looks simplistic and polished, just like how I initially wanted it to be.
